2003 Ford Explorer Sport
The 2003 Ford Explorer Sport takes the traditional Explorer frame and
shrinks it into a two-door, four-passenger wagon. What the 2003 Ford Explorer
Sport retains from its larger sibling is the versatility that has made
the series a smashing success. For on-or-off road driving, in heavy conditions,
for transporting people - all of these tasks are taken up by the 2003
Ford Explorer Sport. And like the name suggests, there is also a nice
dose of attitude thrown into the mix.
Available Models
The 2003 Ford Explorer Sport is offered in three models: XLS, XLT and
XLT Premium.
Interior Features
In the Explorer tradition, form follows function. Behind two comfortable
buckets seats is a rear split-bench seat that provides excellent leg,
knee and headroom and can be folded flat should additional cargo space
be needed. To better connect the sport attitude of the customer and the
vehicle, Explorer Sport's instrument panel and door handles have titanium
accents, and the instrument cluster uses white-faced gauges.
The XLS model covers all the basics and then some, while the top-line
XLT Premium adds such features as rear climate and radio controls and
an AM/FM/cassette/CD player. All Explorer Sport owners can choose from
a number of attractive options that address both performance and comfort.
Exterior Features
The 2003 Ford Explorer Sport has roof rails fitted with optional crossbars
that are both attractive and practical, as they are able to carry up to
100 pounds of cargo. An athletic, powerful appearance is achieved with
wide bodyside moldings, flared wheel arches, integrated front and rear
bumpers and wraparound headlamps.
Performance
Power is standard on all 2003 Explorer Sport models. The engine under
the hood is a 4.0-liter V6 with 203 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 237 lb-ft
of torque at 3000 rpm. 2WD and 4WD configurations are both available,
as are 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions.
The Explorer Sport can certainly handle heavy weight when needed. A two-stage
variable-rate taper leaf spring in the rear helps in this regard. With
lighter loads, the Explorer Sport's longer leaf springs work to keep the
ride smooth. To create a higher spring rate to handle larger, heavier
loads, a second, stiffer leaf contacts with the first to maintain a pleasant
ride.
Safety and Security
Safety features include driver and front-passenger airbags, speed-sensitive
front windshield wipers, fuel pump inertia shut-off switch, child safety
seat top tether anchors and a four-wheel disc antilock braking system.
