2003 Toyota Tundra

The 2003 Toyota Tundra is the full-size pick-up from this erstwhile manufacturer. 2003 sees some nifty additions to the Tundra line including a sporty StepSide Access Cab model. Beyond that, the Tundra line has received freshened styling in front and upgraded trim inside.

Like the Tacoma, the 2003 Toyota Tundra is a line more than it is an individual model. 15 configurations include two cab styles, two engines, two bed lengths and three trim levels. Not to mention 2- or 4-wheel drive. The result is that the 2003 Toyota Tundra has a version for every need, providing that need is for rugged strength, durability and quality.

Available Models
As mentioned above, the Toyota Tundra comes in 15 different configurations but the short version is that it comes in Base, SR5 or Limited editions. They can be 2 or 4WD and they can feature either a V6 or a V8 engine.

Interior Features
The 2003 Toyota Tundra offers pretty high standards for interior amenities even at the base level. It comes with new gray seat fabric, a new center console with four cup holders like that in the Toyota Sequoia SUV, dual map pockets and covered storage. The following is also standard equipment: power steering, cloth upholstery, AM/FM/CD player, digital clock, automatic off headlights and a durable vinyl floor.

Rising to the SR5 trim level gives air conditioning, carpeting, and, at the V8 level, cruise control. The final grade, the Limited trim level, adds power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and an in-dash 6CD changer. At this level a steering wheel audio controls switch and a power sliding rear window have been added this year.

Exterior Features
The Toyota Tundra has similar styling to the Tacoma, only bigger. Like the Tacoma, its many permutations add up to a wide variety of different capabilities and aesthetic statements. New for 2003, the Tundra gets a new, larger grill that extends into the upper section of the bumper for a tougher look up front.

Optional packages offer even more versatility. Choose the Sport Suspension Package for any V8 models and you get Tokico shock absorbers, tuned springs, a rear stabilizer bar, a limited slip differential and graphite-toned 17-inch alloy wheels with P265/65R17 tires.

Performance
The 2003 Toyota Tundra has a number of different powertrain configuration choices. The 4.7-liter i-Force V8 that powers the SR5 V8 and the Limited models, produces 245 hp at 4800rpm and 315 lbs.-ft of torque at 3400. The 3.4-liter DOHC V6 engine behind the Base and SR5 V6 models is also brawny and powerful with 190 hp at 4800 and 220 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 3600.

The V6 engine is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed electronically controlled automatic. This same transmission is standard on V8 models. In terms of performance capability, an important standard equipment package is worth mentioning. The new Towing Package includes a Class IV tow hitch, a seven-pin connector with converter, a 130-amp alternator, and a supplemental transmission oil cooler. The Tundra has a 1,875-pound payload capacity and is rated for towing up to 7,200-pounds.

Safety and Security
Safety in the Toyota Tundra is addressed by dual-front airbags and 4-wheel antilock disc brakes.

2003 Toyota Tundra Highlights

All new for 2003 is a StepSide model that blends a new dimension of style to the ruggedness, responsiveness, ride comfort and refinement owners have come to expect in their Tundra.
What sets the StepSide styling apart from the rest of the Tundra lineup is the addition of a StepSide bed with distinctive tail lamps. The tail lamps pull back over the rear wheel arches for a sleek appearance. The StepSide interior bed width between wheel wells and the bed length remain the same as a regular Tundra bed, while bed depth is increased by nearly two inches.
Tundra receives numerous enhancements for 2003 including a re-designed front fascia with a grille that extends down into the front bumper and round fog lamps that convey a more aggressive appearance. On the SR5 grade, the front fascia and grille are color-keyed with chrome accents, while the Limited grade is completely color-keyed.
Value is enhanced with the addition of new 17-inch alloy wheels as standard equipment on Limited and SR5 grades equipped with a Sport Suspension Package. The Limited also includes a new power sliding rear window. All Tundra models will now feature Anti-Lock Brakes as standard equipment.
Inside, Tundra receives as standard equipment a new multi-function center console, AM/FM/CD audio on the SR5 grade and steering wheel audio controls on the Limited grade.
