2003 Volkswagen Jetta
Design. Performance. Value. Here we have the quintessential Volkswagen
mid-size sedan that thinks it's a sports car. As usual, Volkswagen's signature
steering/handling are part of the "fun driving experience" with
the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, and really compliments the Jetta's many outstanding
standard features like nothing else. If it's complete exhilaration you
want, find a Jetta and hit the gas.
Available Models
Five showstopper models grace Jetta's stage: GL, GLS, GLI, GLX, and the
diesel TDI (turbo direct engine).
Interior Features
Offering everything under the sun doesn't always contribute to the driving
experience - which is why you won't find a toaster in the 2003 Volkswagen
Jetta. What you will find is an eight-speaker cassette stereo system,
air conditioning, interior air filter, tilt wheel, power windows, power
door locks, 60/40 split folding rear seat, dual rear reading lights, power
outlet in trunk, and tachometer. With the GLS you can upgrade with a power
sunroof and in-dash CD player. With the GLI, add a leather-wrapped steering
wheel and front seat lumbar support. Topping off with the GLX, add leather
upholstery, heated 8-way power front seats w/driver-seat memory, steering-wheel
radio controls, automatic climate control, power sunroof, Monsoon sound
system, automatic day/night rear-view mirror, trip computer, and outside-temperature
indicator.
Exterior Features
The 2003 Volkswagen Jetta exterior features include heated driver and
passenger side remote mirrors, clear lens halogen head lamps, and intermittent
rear wiper washer. The GLS sees the addition of alloy wheels. The GLI
sees dual chrome exhaust tips, and heated windshield washer nozzles added.
And finally the GLX adds fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, and rear-window
sunshade.
Performance
The first available engine is the 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder model capable
of 115 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque. The second engine steps up
the performance level with a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder motor with 180 horsepower
and 174 lb-ft of torque. Next up is the incredible alternate fuel TDI
(turbo direct injection) model. It is equipped with a 1.9-liter, in-line,
turbo-charged direct injection 4-cylinder diesel engine, generating 90
horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque. For fuel economy, the TDI tops the
charts with a rating of 42/49 mpg (city/hwy) for manuals, 34/45 mpg (city/hwy)
for automatics. Topping off engine options is the 2.8-liter, V6 that pumps
out 200 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Transmissions avail in 5-speed
manual, optional adaptive 4-speed automatic, or optional 5-speed automatic
with Tiptronic on 1.8T.
Safety and Security
Safety is Volkwagen's self-proclaimed most important standard feature.
Take for instance an anti-theft alarm system, an immobilizer that prevents
the 2003 Volkswagen Jetta from being started up if an unauthorized key
is used, electronic stabilization program for better handling and control.
Further down the list of standard safety features are the dual front and
front side impact airbags, anti-intrusion side door beams, and a collapsible
upon impact steering column. You can also opt for side curtain protection
airbags that extend down the roofline to help minimize head and upper
torso injury. Four-wheel ABS power assisted, vented front discs with solid
rear discs give you braking security.
