2004 Toyota Matrix

Roomy, versatile and fresh - these are the types of things Toyota once said about the Matrix. A sportwagon still in its infancy, the Matrix is quickly making a name for itself. And though the 2004 version is essentially unchanged from last year's model, it is still quite innovative within the often-stale automotive landscape.

Up front, the 2004 Toyota Matrix has an aggressively designed cockpit with Optitron meters and an available 115-volt power outlet. Functional equipment is the key to all Matrix models, as standard features include air conditioning, power steering, a fold-flat passenger seat, a center console, a split folding rear seat, an AM/FM/CD player and a cargo cover.

Exterior Features
The Matrix challenges the conventions of car design with its tall, aggressive look. Functionality continues to dominate however, as the Matrix has a swing-up tailgate and a separate-opening window. With the XRS, things are taken to the extreme with both front and rear spoilers and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Performance
The 2004 Toyota Matrix also offers all-wheel drive. Standard and XR models are fitted with a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine with 130 horsepower (123 horsepower with AWD models) and 125 lb-ft of torque. The XRS has more kick with a 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder model with 180 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque.

Standard and XR models give their owners the option of 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. XRS models let drivers feel the power directly with 6-speed manual. The 2004 Matrix also handles well with engine speed-sensing, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering.

Safety and Security
The 2004 Toyota Matrix is made to withstand collisions with steel body panels, front and rear crumple zones and side-impact door beams. Other safety features include dual front airbags and daytime running lights. Antilock brakes are standard on AWD and XRS models, optional with all others.
