Turbo Engine Powers Up Personal Transportation in the New PT Cruiser GT Model

2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser GTFrankfurt/Main, Sep 09, 2003 - Satisfying those performance-oriented customers who don't want to sacrifice cool styling or day-to-day utility, the turbo-powered Chrysler PT Cruiser GT will arrive in European Chrysler dealerships beginning in October 2003.

With "GT" being the traditional sign of a sportier model, the Chrysler PT Cruiser GT will capitalise on the vehicle's "hot rod" character and add another dimension to the PT Cruiser phenomenon.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser GT's High Output, turbocharged 2.4-litre engine will create 164 kW (223 hp) at 5100 rpm and 332 N•m of torque at 2400-4500 rpm.

Designing the turbocharged engine specifically for this high performance model allowed Chrysler Group engineers to tailor it to customers' performance expectations. A redesigned engine block and cylinder head assembly in addition to all-new pistons and forged steel connecting rods add to the engine's reliability. Racing-style oil squirting mechanisms cool the pistons, which allows for higher output.

Oil and water cooling for the turbocharger was optimised from the start of development, adding to the engine's reliability and durability. High-performance fuel injectors and a new engine controller enhance the engine's performance.

Optimal calibration of the turbo's wastegate and integrated turbo/exhaust manifold resulted in quicker boost, while providing better control of the turbo for reduced emissions and improved driveability. Additionally, special acoustic dampeners on the turbo's intake system all but eliminate the whine historically associated with some turbocharged engines.

The turbo engine is paired with a standard, heavy-duty five-speed manual Getrag transmission. In addition to the powertrain, the PT Cruiser GT's on-road performance is enhanced by specially tuned front struts and rear shocks for more body control, more responsive handling tyres and adapted steering for a more "European" feel.

A performance-tuned exhaust system and a pronounced exhaust note add to the vehicle's sporty character. Four-wheel disc brakes, anti-lock braking system (ABS), low-speed traction control and 17-inch painted five-spoke cast aluminium wheels round out the model's standard equipment.

Visually, the PT Cruiser GT's exterior signals that there is something special under the bonnet, with larger, lower openings on the front fascia, rear fascia with larger exhaust outlet, large diameter chrome exhaust tip and a "GT 2.4T" badge on the liftgate.

The interior of the vehicle also carries "turbo" cues, with leather performance seats, unique silver-faced cluster gauges with 240 kph speedometer and tachometer with "2.4L Turbo" badging, unique instrument panel accents and "GT" embroidered front floor mats. Highlighting the interior are silver accents on steering wheel spokes, satin silver shift knob, chrome door-lock knobs and bright pedals.

PT Cruiser Models and New Features
Chrysler now offers a range of four different PT Cruiser models in Europe: Classic, Touring, Limited and the new GT. The Chrome Package is available on PT Cruiser Touring and Limited models in some markets. In addition, the PT Cruiser Cabrio will go on sale in Europe early in 2004.

With the addition of the 2.4 turbo, four engines are now available based on the model: 1.6 petrol, 2.0 petrol, 2.4 High Output turbo petrol and 2.2 CRD.

Providing power, fuel efficiency and all-round driving abilities, the 2.2 CRD engine was jointly modified by Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz engineers to meet the specific requirements of the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

The latest PT Cruiser models feature a roof-mounted antenna and optional liftgate spoiler for a sportier appearance. Standard safety features now include the Sentry Key® engine immobiliser, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and low-speed traction control, and supplemental side air bags. Speed control also comes as standard with automatic transmission vehicles.

An AM/FM/single CD radio will be standard on all PT Cruiser vehicles, and an AM/FM/CD/cassette radio will be optional. Five new exterior colours are added: Midnight Blue, Seamist Green, Dark Plum, Cool Vanilla and Graphite Metallic. The PT Cruiser Chrome Package now includes additional silver accents on the steering wheel spokes, packaged together with speed control.

For European customers, a navigation radio is available that contains a navigation computer with 12.4-cm (4.9-inch) diagonal display, tuner and CD player all in one unit.

No matter what the model, Chrysler PT Cruiser offers customers good value, as evidenced by its solid sales. In the first half of 2003, nearly 11,000 Chrysler PT Cruiser vehicles were sold in Western Europe, making it the second most popular Chrysler Group vehicle in the region right behind the Chrysler Voyager.

Chrysler PT Cruiser vehicles are built at the Chrysler Group's Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico.
