Visit Saturn for more information on the Saturn Ion.

There are plenty of changes in store for this year's Saturn Ion. Sedans are given a new front end that is unquestionably more on the refined side, there is more standard equipment for both comfort and safety, and the powertrain has been improved. Not bad for just one short year's work.

One of the changes that customers will certainly enjoy is the use of new material to dampen road noise. A new acoustic cover for the engine results in quieter operation while still allowing easy access to underhood fluid checks. Other sound-dampening changes include new acoustic clips for the fuel line, new piston coating and a new exhaust down pipe.

Available Models
The 2005 Saturn Ion is offered as a quad coupe and as a sedan. Saturn labels its three model lineup in such a way that anyone can figure it out. 1, 2 and 3 are the model names. The Ion Red line is covered in a separate review.

Interior Features
Quad coupes have two doors and seat four, while sedans have four doors and seat five. The new seats inside the Ion are newly tailored for a contemporary look in both front and rear. For increased comfort, the seats are wider and deeper at the shoulders and include enhanced thigh and side bolsters .

All models also sport a larger, four-spoke steering wheel that originally debuted on the 2004 Red Line.

Exterior Features
The sedan's revised front fascia and grille adds a more substantial, integrated appearance. Machine facing for the alloy wheels (on 2 and 3 models) and a new chrome beltline molding (3 model) gives an even more uplevel appearance than before.

The 2005 Saturn Ion quad coupe continues to offer innovative dual rear-access doors. Combined with a front-passenger fold-flat seat and the lack of a B-pillar, the rear-access doors help maximize the usefulness of the interior space by making it easy to load and unload passengers and cargo.

Performance
The engine for 2005 is a 2.2-liter Ecotec inline 4-cylinder model. It produces 140 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque.

Standard on the sedan and Quad Coupe is a 5-speed manual transmission that provides continual smoothness and durability. GM's Hydra-Matic 4T45-E automatic transaxle replaces the VTi variable transmission as an option for the quad coupe and also replaces the Aisin 5-speed automatic as an option for the sedan.

Safety and Security
The 2005 Saturn Ion has rear drum brakes and offer optional ABS bundled with traction control. Head-protecting curtain side airbags are available for all; torso side airbags are not offered.
