General Motors Adds Product To Meet Law Enforcement Vehicle Needs

DETROIT, MI, May 5, 2003 - General Motors is working with law enforcement agencies to offer a stable of viable products able to meet all the various rigors of police work. The Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Express one-ton van and HUMMER H1 are all workhorses in this arena, and the Chevrolet Police Tahoe, targeted for production in the third quarter of 2004, will join the stable.

"We are proud of the relationship we have built with law enforcement agencies across North America. We have a long standing history supplying vehicles that meet law enforcement requirements and are pleased that we can offer yet another solid GM product in the Chevrolet Police Tahoe to provide additional options and supplement our already strong line up of law enforcement vehicles," said Brian McVeigh, general manager GM Fleet and Commercial Operations.

Chevrolet Impala Police Vehicle
The Impala offers competitive pricing, over-all performance, and segment-leading fuel economy and industry "first" technology. For example, it is the only police vehicle ever built from initial concept as a police vehicle, and can thus boast incomparable drivability. The Impala has a fully integrated electrical system with a specially designed body harness, as well as an idle boost feature rated as the highest in the industry.

Impala's V-6 engine and front wheel drive platform offer nimbleness, and allows the Impala the distinction of being the only "front-wheel drive" vehicle to pass both the Michigan State Police and LA County Sheriff's departments vehicle tests.

"Thanks to our close relationship with law enforcement entities across the country and their continued feedback, we have been able to continuously provide fine-tuning to our products that make them even more valuable to our customers by providing them the special enhancements they need to do their jobs safely and more easily," said Bruce Wiley, GM Law Enforcement program manager.

Chevrolet Special Service Tahoe
The current Special Service Tahoe allows law enforcement an alternative for various types of service that does not require high speed type driving, yet utility, cargo room and visibility are a must. It is available in either two or four wheel drive.

Chevrolet Express One-Ton Transport Van
The Express one-ton full-size van is most often used for tactical applications, or to transport people or materials. This full size van offers a segment exclusive left-side door, standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, wide opening rear doors, a rear protective halo, the most powerful engine in its class, segment exclusive full-boxed frame and the extended models offer an extended wheel-base with the same rear overhang as a regular length van that enhances the safety of the vehicle.

HUMMER H1 Tactical Unit
The HUMMER H1 offers extreme off-road and tactical application for police, search and rescue operations. Capable of negotiating 30 inches of water, climbing 22 inch ledges, and scaling extreme 60 percent inclines, declines and 40 percent side slopes the H1 provides law enforcement the ultimate in maneuverability regardless of terrain. Built to military specifications the H1 can traverse severe weather conditions and rugged terrain carrying a full payload of 12,100 pounds.

Chevrolet Police Tahoe
The latest edition to the GM stable is the Chevrolet Police Tahoe, which will be certified for high speed and severe duty law enforcement use. The Tahoe provides alternate selection for day-to-day patrol, K9 Unit use, SWAT, and various other applications where rear wheel drive and versatility are a high priority.

"Since 9/11, the operating methodologies of police and fire municipalities have changed. They are looking at new and innovate ways to utilize police and emergency response vehicles, how to carry more equipment, expand communication capability, as well as address issues created by tactical and hazardous material gear," said Wiley. "The Chevrolet Police Tahoe is capable of meeting the rigors of all these needs."

GM Advantage
In addition to the quality and safety the GM line up offers law enforcement, specific advantages include "road ready delivery," which allows GM to deliver new vehicles completely equipped and ready for use.

Law Enforcement Product Council
GM is committed to continuing its relationship with law enforcement entities through the Law Enforcement Product Council composed of members from police agencies in the US and in Canada as well as key GM representatives. This council will focus on all aspects of vehicle usage keeping officer safety and security as the highest priority.
