2003 Volvo C70
When it comes to a combination of performance, prestige and reliability,
people need look no further than the Volvo line-up. This year, with the
arrival of the 2003 Volvo C70, one must add grace and style to that description.
A near-luxury, front-wheel drive two-door convertible, the C70 represents
a new Volvo design aesthetic.
2003 sees more power for both high and light-pressure turbo, and the
elimination of the Coupe version, brought out last year in parallel with
the convertible.
Available Models
The C70 comes with a choice of high or light-pressure turbo models.
Interior Features
The C70 is designed to compete in the luxury segment and, consequently,
it sets high standards for interior amenity. The 2.4-liter light-pressure
turbo, the lower grade, comes with all that one would expect, that is,
dual zone automatic climate control, heated power seats, etc.
The up-level high-pressure turbo adds only a few interior items but they
are significant. With this grade you receive wood-trim, a trip computer,
an automatic day/night rear-view mirror and an audio system upgrade.
Optional extras allow the addition of these up-level features to the
lower grade model but other than that there are no factory options available.
Exterior Features
The exterior of the C70 is a key reason for the success of this car. Grace
and speed flow into its smooth lines whether at rest or in motion. The
fully automatic insulated cloth top tucks away invisibly at the touch
of a button. It folds seamlessly below the rear cowl and is covered by
a slim hardcover tonneau that clamps down securely over top.
Performance
The C70 is has an odd power profile for a couple of reasons. For a start,
a car this big, powerful and fast should by rights, have a V6 or a V8
engine. Instead the engineers at Volvo have designed their engines to
be smaller, more fuel efficient, yet just as powerful, through the use
of turbo systems. The C70 is a prime example. The other curious feature
of the two engines in the C70 is that the more powerful one, a high-pressure
turbo, has less displacement, at 2.3-liter. The lesser engine of these
two 5-cylinder turbos is a 2.4-liter.
The light-pressure turbo 2.3-liter jumps this year from 190 hp to 197,
with 210 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm. The high-pressure-turbo models increase
to 242 hp at 5400 rpm, up from 236 on last year's and it has 243 lb-ft
of torque. A 5-speed automatic transmission is offered on the 2.4 while
the high-powered 2.3 gets a sport 5-speed manual. However, the automatic
is available optionally for the high-pressure turbo models.
Safety and Security
Safety and Volvo go hand in hand. The C70, amongst other features, has
emergency pop-up roll-bars that deploy in case of a rollover. The C70
also comes with 4-wheel vented antilock disc brakes with and an assortment
of passive restraint systems such as dual front, side impact protection
(SIPS), whiplash protection (WHIPS) and the ISO-fix baby seat attachment
system.
