2003 Volvo S40
The 2003 Volvo S40 is the most accessible model Volvo produces, in terms
of price, in North America. That said though, they are still representative
of the high standards in build quality, safety and sophistication that
Volvo maintains for its entire fleet.
2003 has seen the incorporation of a host of visual and performance enhancements
to the S40 sedan. The result is a full-size, four-door sedan with lots
of power, generous fittings and style. Oriented toward family, the S40
also has standard ISO-FIX child safety seat restraints, excellent fuel
economy and, in general, offers good value for money.
Available Models
The S40 comes in one model and trim level. However, it is possible to
add one or more of several major equipment packages to enhance and personalize
a purchase.
Interior Features
The S40 contains good standard fittings and excellent interior styling.
Cloth and vinyl upholstery can be upgraded, with the Sport Package, to
leather. The instrument cluster has been refined for 2003, making them
even more clear and easy to decipher. Additional standard features include
automatic climate control, cruise control, power steering, windows, mirrors
and door locks, and remote keyless entry. The AM/FM/cassette/CD player
comes with a power antenna.
Major packages include the Sport, Cold Weather and Premium packages,
which add comprehensive collections of features that can also be added
as stand alone options. Highlights are items like the power sunroof, traction
control, heated seats and upgraded audio.
Exterior Features
2003 sees the installation of Volvo's new "egg-crate" style
grille, new body-colour side mouldings and bumpers. The result is a more
adventurous and sporty appearance. However, aspects of the major packages
include exterior features. The Sport Package, for example, adds aggressive
16-inch Galactica alloy wheels, new front headlight surrounds and both
front and rear spoilers. These all combine to create a drastic change
to the car's look and feel.
Performance
Like the other Volvo's the S40 relies on sophisticated turbo technology
to maximize engine power and make a smaller engine do more with the same
amount of fuel.
Though a full-size car entry-luxury sedan, the S40 is equipped with only
a 1.9-liter 4-cylinder. Turbo power makes this engine capable of producing
170 hp at 5200 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 1800. This means that the
engine has ample power throughout the engines range. It gets an excellent
segment leading 22/32 mpg (city/hwy).
Safety and Security
Safety and Volvo go hand in hand. The S40 comes with 4-wheel vented antilock
disc brakes with and an assortment of passive restraint systems such as
dual front, side impact protection (SIPS), whiplash protection (WHIPS),
curtain head protection and the ISO-fix baby seat attachment system
