2004 Pontiac Grand Am

The trio of SE models combines to form the base of Pontiac's best-selling vehicle. While Grand Am coupes, as well as top-line sedans, are offered in GT trims, it is these nicely appointed introductory models that serve to propel the Pontiac Grand Am to its popular status.

It's not hard to understand why. The 2004 Pontiac Grand Am continues to come with a nice set of standard features across all trims. This year, each and every Grand Am will have 5-mph bumpers, air-conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, battery rundown protection, an electric remote trunk release, an oil life monitor, the PASSLock II theft deterrent and a sealed-for-life transmission.

Available Models
The SE class of the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am is broken down into three distinct levels: SE, SE1 and SE2. GT models are covered in a separate review.

Interior Features
Four-door sedans are larger and slightly more spacious than coupes, which focus on the sportier side of driving. They seat five passengers and offer a cargo volume of 14.6 cubic feet.

On the entry-level side of things, the SE class of the 2004 Pontiac Grand Am isn't arranged

to provide you with a host of luxury items. However, value doesn't equate with cheap, so you don't find yourself in a stripped-down, feature-less interior ride either.

For 2004, all models except the base SE have an MP3 option that upgrades the existing CD player to read discs recorded in MP3 format. In other words, Pontiac is right up there with the times, so you can be too.

Exterior Features
The 2004 Pontiac Grand Am has always held the attention of younger buyers, and the 2004 edition should be no different in this respect. But functionality isn't sacrificed for style. The front end, with its familiar split Pontiac grille, settles down to a gentle wedge, cutting the air and creating down force at highway speeds.

Performance
SE and SE1 models come with a peppy 2.2-liter Ecotec inline 4-cylinder engine. It produces up to 140 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Customers can choose between two transmission types: 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual.

With SE2 models, the standard package is that much more appealing thanks to their 3.4-liter V6 engine. It delivers 170 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

Safety and Security
The standard safety package of the SE2 features such items as dual front airbags, traction control and antilock brakes (optional with other models).
