2003 Pontiac Grand Am
With five trim levels and some style and equipment refinements, the 2003
Pontiac Grand Am has a lot to offer for consumers in the compact car class.
It is designed to be both a practical and economical family sedan, yet
a Coupe version with superb handling and accelerative ability is available.
The chameleon 2003 Pontiac Grand Am is a front-wheel drive 2 or 4-door
car that can have any of three engines under the hood.
Available Models
The sedan version of the 2003 Pontaic Grand Am comes as an SE, SE1, SE2,
GT or GT1 while the Coupe comes only at the GT or GT1 models. These differences
in trim level are not representative of simple enhancements to interior
features. In fact, they also indicate different engines and/or performance
components.
Interior Features
Base SE comes with great features for a base model; including air conditioning,
AM/FM/CD player, cloth upholstery on front bucket seats, tachometer, variable
intermittent wipers plus more valuable basics. SE1 adds cruise control,
power windows and mirrors, power height adjustable drivers seat and a
split-folding rear seat.
The two GT models add even more comfort-related features. For example,
GTs mean an upgrade to a Monsoon Stereo system, tilt leather-wrapped steering
wheel with radio controls, 6-way power adjustable driver's seat and at
the GT1 level, a power sunroof.
Exterior Features
On the outside the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am continues to sport the award
winning styling that has distinguished it in the past. However, 2003 sees
a deletion of the lower body plastic side cladding. Other characteristics
include a rear spoiler at the GT levels and alloy wheels from the SE on
up. Fog lights are standard on all models and a variety of additional
options, like the power sunroof or spoiler, can be included according
to the buyer's discretion.
Performance
The three engine choices and the variety of mechanical differences really
set the various Grand Am versions apart, but, it should be said, even
the base SE has pretty good handling and accelerative capacity.
The SE has a 4-cyl 2.2-liter engine with 140 hp at 5600rpm. This produces
150lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm and it gets 24/33 mpg (city/hwy) with a
slight fluctuation depending on whether you are running a 4-speed automatic
or a 5-speed manual transmission. A move to SE2 brings on the 3.4-liter
V6 with 170 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Finally, at the GT level, you
enjoy a slightly more powerful Ram Air engine. This is capable of 175
hp and 205lb-ft of torque and performance is also enhanced at this level
with sport suspension.
Safety and Security
Traction control and ABS brakes are standard from the SE1 level on up
while GTs have 4-wheel disc brakes instead of drums.
