2003 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon

The 2003 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon joins the sedan to fill out the lineup of Subaru's smallest car. With an extra trim level and more interior room, the Impreza Sport Wagon is justifiably differentiated from its sedan sibling. There are many similarities between the two, however. Both handle all manner of road conditions easily with standard all-wheel drive, and both combine safety, comfort and convenience features to form well-rounded subcompact cars.

Available Models
The 2003 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon is offered in three trim levels: RS, Outback Sport and the rally-inspired WRX. The Impreza sedan is addressed in a separate review.

Interior Features
Like the Impreza sedan, the four-door wagon seats five passengers. With over three feet of front and rear headroom and over 42 inches of front legroom, the Impreza Sport Wagon is also similar to the sedan in terms of passenger accommodation. However, with its body style the wagon provides much more cargo volume. When tallied, the result is a total of 61.6 cubic ft. of cargo space.

All 2003 Imprezas have a carefully laid-out interior with convenience and relaxation in mind. Air conditioning, power steering, cruise control, cloth upholstery, power mirrors, windows and door locks and an AM/FM/CD player are standard on both the body types. The 2003 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon is geared more towards families and does not come with quite as many features in its base model. However, uplevel trims in both body styles are virtually identical, with WRX models adding an in-dash 6-disc CD changer and map lights.

Exterior Features
The entry-level TS trim comes with roof rails, while the Outback Sport trim adds fog lights, a roof rack and alloy wheels. The WRX trim has an aluminum-alloy hood featuring a functional hood scoop, aerodynamic side ground effects and a rear-gate spoiler.

Performance
There are two engines available with the Impreza wagon. The first is offered with TS and Outback Sport models. It is a 165-horsepower, horizontally opposed 2.5-liter engine. The WRX is based on Subaru's World Rally competition cars and has a 227-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, sport suspension and limited-slip differential. On the other hand, the Outback Sport shows its SUV flavor with raised heavy-duty suspension. 4-speed automatic transmission and 5-speed manual are both offered.

Safety and Security
The Impreza Sport Wagon addresses safety with antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and dual front airbags. The WRX also comes with front side airbags.
