2004 Chevy Astro

The 2004 Chevy Astro is not a flashy minivan. It doesn't provide loads of impractical gadgets, or adorn itself with an exaggerated set of "stylish" features. The Chevy Astro is designed for one thing: to transport goods and people in the safest, most convenient way possible.

The 2004 Chevy Astro and its look-alike cousin, the GMC Safari, are America's only truck-based minivans. Their basic design goes all the way back to the late 1980s. They have continued to use this same design, year after year, because it offers stability, safety and durability. In other words, nothing better has come along yet.

The 2004 Chevy Astro is offered in three models: base, LS and LT.

Interior Features
The reliable Chevy Astro seats eight passengers on two front bucket seats and two 3-person rear benches. Second-row bucket seats are optional. With the rear seats removed, the 2004 Chevy Astro is able to provide up to 170 cubic feet of cargo space.

For 2004, all Chevy Astro models have larger, standard 16-inch wheels and tires. The base model has steel wheels, while aluminum wheels are standard on all uplevel LS and LT models. The Astro's tires are P215/70R16 all-season steel-belted radials.

Exterior Features
The 2004 Chevy Astro comes in one body length with a passenger-side sliding door. However, side-by-side rear cargo doors or extra-cost Dutch doors with separate-opening upper glass are offered.

Performance
The 2004 Chevy Astro is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The engine under the hood for 2004 is a 4.3-liter V6. It can generate 190 horsepower at 4400 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 2800 rpm.

The Astro's V6 engine uses multi-port fuel injection for long-lasting performance. It is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

For quick, responsive stops, the Astro has standard antilock four-wheel brakes with a highly responsive Hydroboost hydraulic assist power brake booster and GM's Dynamic Rear Proportioning.

Safety and Security
The makers at Chevy understand that a minivan's primary responsibility is safety. To this end they equipped the Astro with standard driver and front passenger airbags, a child security sliding door, battery-rundown protection and the PASSLock theft-deterrent system. A lockout provision also prevents the driver door from locking if the key is inadvertently left in the ignition.
