With a loyalty rate that exceeds 50 percent, the Chevry Suburban is obviously doing something right. It has continued to move with the times, upgrading itself year after year to meet the ever changing demands of the game. What remains constant is a solid, hardworking core that won't quit on you when you need it most.

The ¾-ton 2500 is the larger of the two Suburban models. Bigger, stronger and more imposing that 1500s, it is a true beast on the road. For 2004, the Suburban trails as much as 12,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Available Models
The 2004 Chevy Suburban 2500 comes in two trim levels: LS and LT. Smaller Suburban 1500 models are covered in a separate review.

The four-door Chevy Suburban has a standard third-row bench seat, resulting in a maximum occupancy of nine passengers (with a front bench seat). Added together, the 2004 Suburban 2500 has 131.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.

The 2004 Chevy Suburban has a smarter multiplexed electrical architecture. This allows the driver information center to report on as many as 34 vehicle functions-and in Spanish and French, no less.

The LT model is really all class. It has such standard features as the OnStar system, a Bose AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer, leather upholstery, heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals and steering wheel radio controls.

Exterior Features
Available exterior mirrors feature power-tilt glass and power folding to protect them in narrow spaces. They also have heating elements that clear snow or ice, left-side electrochromatic glass that automatically dims glaring headlights, puddle lights, turn signal indicators in the glass and a memory feature. An available power-adjustable camper mirror can be extended to a vehicle width of as much as 106 inches.

Performance
Two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are both available for the ¾-ton Suburban. The standard engine is a 6.0-liter Vortec V8 mated to a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission. It dishes out 325 horsepower at 4000 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

An optional engine is also available for 2004. It is an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 with 320 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 445 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.

The Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system is offered with both 2WD and 4WD models. With 4WD models, a Z71 Off-Road Package is also available.
