2004 Ford Expedition

Though it can't quite compete with Ford's other full-size sport utility vehicle, the giant Excursion, in terms of size and power, the 2004 Ford Expedition is still a big, brawny, comfortable vehicle. It has power and space and a wash of trims that cover everything from purely functional equipment to sheer decadence.

For 2004, the model lineup has been expanded and more standard features are offered across the line. Last year's Expedition received a major makeover that saw an almost entirely new model roll out of the plant. This year, a few minor touchups complete the package.

Available Models
The lineup of Ford Expeditions grows a little in 2004, with a total of five offered: XLS, XLT, XLT Sport, NBX and Eddie Bauer. NBX and Eddie Bauer models are covered in another review.

Interior Features
As mentioned, the 2004 Ford Expedition isn't on par with the Excursion's size. However, it still has three rows of seating, with an available front bench seat pushing the seating capacity to nine.

The 2004 Ford Expedition makes good use of its large interior. It provides versatility with a fold-flat-into-the-floor third row 60/40 seat, a 40/20/40 second row seat with manual CenterSlide section and best-in-class cargo volume.

The XLT Sport trim has been added to the lineup for 2004. It takes an XLT model's offerings, which include standard power-adjustable pedals, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player and front and rear air conditioning, and adds tubular side steps and 265/70R17 white-letter tires.

Exterior Features
The 2004 Ford Expedition is quite a big vehicle, and its design does nothing to hide this. Ford says that it exudes a confidence-inspiring stance with large headlamps, tail lamps, mirrors and door handles. The new exterior colors for 2004 are Pueblo Gold and Red Fire.

Performance
A tire-pressure monitor is now standard with XLT and XLT Sport models. As usual, rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are available.

There are two engines offered with the 2004 Ford Expedition. The first is a 4.6-liter V8 with 232 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 291 lb-ft of torque at 3450 rpm. The second, a 5.4-liter V8, delivers 260 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. It features a cast iron engine block that has been computer-designed to reduce vibration for quieter operation.

XLT and XLT Sport models offer optional load-leveling air suspension. Also available with these models is an antiskid system.

Safety and Security
Dual front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes with brake assist are standard.
