2003 Toyota 4Runner
The one-two punches in the midsize SUV segment for Toyota are the 4-Runner
and the Highlander. The Highlander is the vehicle for those who really
want a luxury sedan with the added security, and capability of the SUV
class. The 2003 Toyota 4Runner is the businesslike member of the duo.
Gifted with true off-road capability and focussed toward rugged performance,
the 4Runner is continuing the tradition its predecessors have established
since their first introduction in 1985.
Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the designers at Toyota have made
numerous technological advancements, enhancing the new Toyota 4Runner's
capabilities and refreshing its styling as it enters its fourth generation.
The 2003 Toyota 4Runner is bigger, more powerful, more comfortable and
has better mileage to boot.
Available Models
There are three models of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner, each with different
capabilities and trim orientations. At the base level, displaying features
above Toyota's usual SR5 trim characteristics is the SR5. This model sets
the very high baseline that Toyota has established with the 4Runner this
year. Next up is the sport-oriented and predictably labelled Sport model.
For the highest level of luxury and amenity, the Limited model, with significantly
increased standard content.
Interior Features
The 2003 Toyota 4Runner SR5 sets a high standard with automatic climate
control, cruise control, air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD player. These
are usually not standard features at the base level. In addition a large
assortment of added amenities is included. The Sport has all these features
and more, adding performance related interior touches like a leather-wrapped
steering wheel with radio controls and heated power mirrors.
The Limited has the most, in terms of interior luxury. This is a limousine-like
set of standards with dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, heated,
power seating, rear radio controls with wireless headphones, a universal
garage door opener and an automatic day/night rearview mirror.
Exterior Features
The exterior of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner is graced by both stylish form
and useful function. Featuring an all-new chassis design with exterior
styling, the new Toyota 4Runner expands the definition of the classic
off-road SUV. A wide, rounded front end features an aggressive horizontal
grille complemented with a front bumper and skid plate, and wide headlamps
that convey ruggedness. Large overfenders and cladding convey strength
while large tail lamps and a rear bumper with an integrated tow hitch
accent the rear. Roof racks and fully integrated fog lights top off the
selection.
Performance
4Runner offers a choice of two sophisticated and state-of-the-art engines.
An all-new 4.0-liter V6, Toyota's first all-aluminum engine on a light
truck, which features a new linkless electronic throttle control system
with intelligence (ETCS-i) that helps improve performance and increase
fuel economy. With 245 horsepower at 5,200 RPM and 282 lb.-ft. of torque
at 3,800 RPM, it generates one of the highest six-cylinder torque capabilities
in the mid-SUV segment. Fuel economy of 18/21 mpg (2WD) and 17/21 for
all 4WD models is sufficient for EPA-certification as a Low Emission Vehicle
(LEV).
Alternatively, 4Runner now offers a 4.7-liter i-Force V8 engine on all
models. The powerful V8 produces 235 horsepower at 4,800 RPM and 320 lb.-ft.
of torque at 3,400 RPM. 16/20 mpg for all 2WD models and 15/19 for all
4WD grades is not as good as the other engine but this one has nearly
40lb-ft more peak torque.
Safety and Security
The new Toyota 4Runner also has extensive safety technology with four-channel
Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake-force
Distribution (EBD) all standard. Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) with traction
control (TRAC) is also in place on all models along with advanced airbag
and belt restraint systems.
