2002 Mercury Cougar
A dashing and sporty appearance is merely an introduction to the rest
of the 2002 Mercury Cougar Coupe's list of fine attributes. The new model
year features an array of improvements and additions, coupled with firmly
established performance specification and safety standards.
Available Models
Two 2-door models are available for 2002 - the Mercury Cougar
I-4 and the Mercury Cougar V6 - the primary difference easily spotted
in the performance department with differing engines. Various packages
are offered within these models, V6 packages that list Sport, Sport Premium,
and Sport Ultimate versions that now include the new XR package and C2
package.
Interior Features
New for this year is a full convenience group comprised of
a remote keyless entry system, cruise control, illuminated entry, rear
wiper and washer. The instrument panel features a satin face with sharp
graphics, satin aluminum surround-rings, and gauge pointers. The rear
seat splits and folds down 60/40 for extra cargo space.
Cougar C2 includes a six-Cd changer, diamond-patterned cloth bucket seats,
and optional black leather upholstery.
Exterior Features
Sport packages offer several amenities like sixteen-inch wheels
and tires, and interesting aluminum accelerator, brake, and clutch pedals.
The Cougar C2 highlights a French-blue body, spoiler, and center caps
of the machined aluminum wheels. C2 is also presented in Silver Frost
and Vibrant White and Black. Cougar XR features a red or black clear coat
with color-keyed hood scoop and spoiler, seventeen-inch wheels painted
black with red center caps.
Performance
The Mercury Cougar offers you a choice between tow engines
- the standard 2.0-litre, DOHC, 16-valve Zetec Four-cylinder with 170
horsepower and 165 lbs-ft of torque, or the optional 2.5-litre DOHC, 24-valve
Duratic V6 that cranks out 170 horsepower and 165 lbs-ft of torque.
The front suspension is comprised of MacPherson struts, with an independent
quadra-link design with coil springs and a stabilizer making up the rear
suspension. The resulting ride is smooth and quiet. Precision handling
is enhanced by the power rack-and-pinion steering.
Safety and Security
In this department, the Mercury Cougar is equipped with standards
like three-point seatbelts, a driver depowered air bag, passenger depowered
air bag, side impact door beams, and head restraints. The V6 Sport Ultimate
package adds side impact air bags.
The standard braking system is four-wheel disc, with ABS brakes available
as an option. The high-end V6 Sport models feature all-speed traction
control. The SecuriLock theft deterrent system only allows the person
with an appropriate key to start the ignition, and a remote keyless entry
system is included in the deal.
